Dragan J. Vučićević, the editor of Informer TV, has made an impassioned appeal for international intervention to protect media freedom in Serbia, following what he describes as politically motivated attempts to silence his television station. During a broadcast of the show “Kolegijum,” Vučićević wore a t-shirt featuring U.S. President Donald Trump, whom he hailed as a defender of free speech and media freedom. Vučićević called on Trump and other Western democratic leaders to prevent the closure of Informer TV, which he claims is the only opposition media outlet in Serbia.
Vučićević’s appeal comes in the wake of significant political changes in Serbia. The Students’ List, a political movement that emerged from student protests, recently won the parliamentary elections held on October 25, 2026, defeating the long-standing Serbian Progressive Party (SNS). The shift in power has been accompanied by allegations of media suppression, with Vučićević accusing the new government of attempting to revoke Informer TV’s broadcasting license.
In his broadcast, Vučićević criticized the new administration for what he perceives as a stark departure from the previous government’s approach to media. He noted that during Aleksandar Vučić’s 14-year tenure, no media outlets were shut down or sued, despite harsh criticism and allegations against the government. In contrast, Vučićević claims that within days of the Students’ List’s electoral victory, there have been efforts to silence opposition voices.
Vučićević specifically targeted a so-called “expert commission” that he alleges is fabricating charges to justify the revocation of Informer TV’s license. He dismissed the commission’s arguments as baseless, citing an incident during the election campaign where Aleksandar Vučić, then a candidate, was accused of violating children’s rights by visiting a family’s home. Vučićević argued that such accusations are being used as pretexts to shut down his station.
The editor also defended Informer TV’s right to express political opinions, drawing parallels with international media outlets like CNN and Fox News in the United States, which are known for their political stances. He argued that having a political viewpoint should not be grounds for media suppression.
Vučićević’s appeal for international support underscores the tensions between media outlets and the new government in Serbia. The situation has drawn attention to broader issues of media freedom and the role of opposition voices in the country. Vučićević revealed that Informer TV has filed several criminal complaints following an incident in which individuals allegedly entered the station’s premises and intimidated staff members. Despite these challenges, Vučićević vowed to continue fighting for media freedom in Serbia.
The political landscape in Serbia has been volatile following the elections, with the Students’ List’s victory marking a significant shift in governance. The transition has been fraught with accusations of media bias and suppression, raising concerns about the future of free speech in the country. Vučićević’s appeal to international leaders highlights the potential for increased scrutiny of Serbia’s media policies and the broader implications for democratic practices in the region.
