Ivana Mihić Leads Restoration of Historic Serbian Monastery

Ivana Mihić, a prominent figure in Serbian cinema, has taken on a new role as a dedicated volunteer in the restoration of the Rajinovac Monastery, a site of historical and cultural significance in Serbia. Mihić, who is the daughter of renowned actress Vera Čukić and legendary playwright and screenwriter Gordan Mihić, has been actively involved in the comprehensive renovation efforts at the monastery, located near Belgrade.

The restoration project at the Rajinovac Monastery has seen significant progress, with the complete reconstruction of the church’s roof being recently completed. This work was carried out under the guidance of Archimandrite Serafim Kužić, the monastery’s abbot, and with the blessing of Patriarch Porfirije. In addition to the roof, the restoration efforts have included the creation of a monastery library, which is considered a crucial spiritual component of the site’s revival. Other completed works include paving large paths and the courtyard with stone, refurbishing the church’s woodwork, and asphalting roads, sidewalks, and pedestrian paths.

Mihić’s involvement in the monastery’s restoration is deeply personal. She has shared her experiences of growing up near the monastery, where she spent significant portions of her childhood. Her parents purchased a property and built a house near the monastery before she was born, and the family would often spend summers and sometimes winters there. The proximity to the Danube River, just 200 meters from their home, provided a backdrop for her childhood adventures, which included swimming, building treehouses, and exploring the surrounding forests.

The actress’s transition from city life to a more rural existence reflects a profound personal transformation. Mihić has embraced the tranquility of rural life, moving away from the hustle and bustle of the city to enjoy a more idyllic lifestyle. Her social media posts often depict her enjoyment of this serene environment, highlighting activities such as making traditional Serbian preserves with her mother and assisting her father and neighbors during the local rakija distillation process.

Mihić’s dedication to the Rajinovac Monastery’s restoration underscores the cultural and spiritual importance of such heritage sites in Serbia. The monastery itself holds a significant place in Serbian culture, serving as a symbol of the nation’s religious and historical heritage. Mihić’s efforts contribute not only to the preservation of this cultural landmark but also to the ongoing cultural engagement and identity formation within the community.

Her work at the monastery is a testament to her commitment to cultural heritage and personal growth, blending her artistic background with a newfound dedication to rural and spiritual life. While the broader impact of the monastery’s restoration on the local community remains to be fully assessed, Mihić’s involvement has certainly brought attention to the importance of preserving cultural sites and the role they play in shaping personal and collective identities.
