Fortenova Sells Serbian Retail Operations to ALTA Retail

Fortenova grupa has announced the sale of its Serbian retail operations, including Idea Marketi, to ALTA Retail, marking a significant shift in the Serbian retail landscape. The agreement, signed by Fortenova grupa and ALTA Retail, involves the transfer of ownership of Idea Marketi, one of Serbia’s largest retail chains, along with four associated companies: Enna Fruit, Super Kartica, M-Profil, and mStart. These companies play a crucial role in the operational and technological infrastructure of the retail chain.

Idea Marketi is well-known in Serbia for its brands Idea, Mercator, and Roda, and operates an extensive network of stores across more than 80 cities and municipalities in the country. The sale is part of Fortenova grupa’s strategic decision to exit the Serbian market and focus its resources on regions where it holds a leading market position. According to Fabris Peruško, a member of the board and CEO of Fortenova grupa, the company would have needed to make significant long-term investments to maintain its presence in Serbia, a market with its own unique dynamics and challenges.

Enna Fruit, one of the companies included in the transaction, is a leading distributor of fresh fruits and vegetables in Serbia, while Super Kartica, M-Profil, and mStart provide essential services such as loyalty programs, real estate management, and IT solutions. These components are integral to the retail chain’s infrastructure and logistical operations.

ALTA Retail, part of the rapidly growing ALTA Group, views the acquisition as a major step in its business expansion in Serbia. Branislava Kosovac, director of ALTA Retail, emphasized the importance of investing in companies with strong market positions and recognizable brands. She expressed confidence in the potential for growth and development through modernization and process improvements, while respecting the identity and values that the Idea, Mercator, and Roda brands have built over the years.

The transaction is expected to have significant implications for the Serbian retail market, particularly for employees and consumers. Idea Marketi is among the top ten largest employers in Serbia, and the change in ownership could lead to shifts in employment dynamics and market competition. However, detailed plans on how ALTA Retail intends to manage and grow the acquired businesses have not been disclosed.

Fortenova grupa’s decision to sell its Serbian operations aligns with its broader strategy to strengthen its market positions in regions where it already has a leadership role, particularly in markets tied to the euro currency. This strategic refocusing allows the company to allocate its resources more effectively and pursue long-term growth in its core markets.

The sale of Idea Marketi and its associated companies is a significant development in the ongoing evolution of the Serbian retail sector, which has seen various mergers and acquisitions in recent years. The transaction highlights the dynamic nature of the market and the strategic decisions companies must make to navigate its complexities.

As the transaction progresses, the long-term effects on the Serbian retail landscape, including potential changes in market competition and consumer experience, remain to be seen. The completion of the sale is contingent upon meeting all conditions outlined in the purchase agreement, and it is expected to bring new opportunities and challenges for both Fortenova grupa and ALTA Retail.
