South Korea Deploys Hyunmoo-5 Missile Amid Rising North Korea Tensions

Jan 19, 2026

South Korea has deployed its most powerful ballistic missile, the Hyunmoo-5, to strengthen military capabilities amid rising tensions with North Korea. Now operational in frontline units, this short-range ballistic missile represents a significant upgrade in South Korea’s arsenal.

The Hyunmoo-5 is crucial for countering North Korean threats. It carries a conventional warhead of up to eight tons, the heaviest payload in a South Korean missile system. While classified as short-range, reducing the warhead weight could extend its range to about 3,000 kilometers. This capability is vital for targeting underground facilities like command bunkers used by North Korean leaders.

The missile’s deployment supports South Korea’s “massive punishment and retaliation” doctrine, which includes the “Kill Chain” preemptive strike strategy and advanced air defense systems. These measures are central to South Korea’s defense against potential North Korean aggression. Lee Il Woo, director of the Korea Defense Network, believes North Korea’s air defenses are unlikely to intercept the Hyunmoo-5.

Despite its power, experts highlight limitations. Many of North Korea’s strategic assets are deeply buried beneath granite rock at depths between 100 and 150 meters. Without nuclear warheads, penetrating these targets remains difficult. In response, South Korea is developing new systems like the Hyunmoo-6 and Hyunmoo-7 for greater range and penetration.

The deployment reflects ongoing geopolitical tensions on the Korean Peninsula and may attract attention from neighboring countries and global powers. It underscores South Korea’s commitment to maintaining a strong defense posture against persistent threats from the North.

This development coincides with North Korea advancing its missile programs through numerous tests that have alarmed the international community. South Korea’s enhancement of its missile capabilities aims to deter aggression and ensure regional stability.

The operational deployment of the Hyunmoo-5 marks a pivotal moment in South Korea’s defense strategy, highlighting its resolve to protect national sovereignty.
