The Niš Film Festival is set to celebrate its 60th anniversary on August 29, 2026, under the slogan “More than a Game,” marking a significant milestone for this long-standing cultural event. However, the festival is currently at the center of a divide within the Serbian film community, highlighting tensions between government-sponsored cultural events and independent initiatives.
Katarina Žutić, a prominent Serbian actress and a member of the festival jury, has spoken out about the importance of local actors and their connection to the audience. She emphasized that it is the local actors, not international stars like Jean-Claude Van Damme, who have a more profound presence in the homes of the Serbian public. “In our country, we are the ones who are most often in the homes of our audience, not Jean-Claude Van Damme,” she stated.
The festival, organized by the Association of Film Actors of Serbia, has seen a significant shift this year as many local actors have chosen to participate in this independent event rather than the government-sponsored festival, which has already commenced. Žutić explained that last year, for the first time in 59 years, the association voted not to participate in what she described as the “charade that everything is fine,” reflecting dissatisfaction with the current state of society.
The independent festival will feature 19 films in competition, along with two films in a non-competitive section.
