Belgrade Book Fair Highlights School Day’s Focus on Reading and Diversity

The 69th International Book Fair in Belgrade has inaugurated a special School Day dedicated to students and educational institutions, emphasizing the importance of reading culture and the role of education in fostering understanding and acceptance of diversity. The event, held at the Ministry of Education’s stand, featured projects from various primary schools, showcasing innovative educational initiatives.

Among the projects presented were “Učimo, stvaramo, rastemo zajedno” by OŠ “Boško Đuričić” from Jagodina, which translates to “We Learn, Create, and Grow Together,” and “Interaktivna demonstracija robotike i programiranja” by OŠ “Lazar Savatić” from Zemun, focusing on interactive demonstrations of robotics and programming. Additionally, OŠ “Mića Stojković” from Umčari highlighted their project “Preduzetništvo nas pokreće, sport nas spaja, drugarstvo nas čuva,” which translates to “Entrepreneurship Drives Us, Sports Unite Us, Friendship Protects Us.” OŠ “Branko Radičević” from Gabrovac showcased “Preduzimljiva nastava – preduzimljiva deca,” or “Enterprising Teaching – Enterprising Children.”

Ivan Ćilerdžić, the Assistant Minister for Preschool and Primary Education, emphasized the significance of the School Day, stating that it is dedicated to students, teachers, school librarians, and all those who contribute daily to the development of a reading culture and a love for knowledge. He remarked, “This fair is not solely about books. It is a meeting place for education, modern teaching tools, new ideas, and examples of good practice.” Ćilerdžić highlighted that books offer more than just information; they provide new stories, insights, ideas, and desires.

The International Book Fair in Belgrade is a significant cultural event in Serbia, known for its role in promoting literature and education. This year’s focus on educational projects underscores the fair’s commitment to fostering a culture of reading and learning among young people. The fair provides a platform for schools to share innovative projects and for educators to exchange ideas and experiences.

The emphasis on diversity and acceptance through education aligns with broader educational goals in Serbia, aiming to equip students with the skills and understanding necessary to thrive in a diverse world. The projects presented during the School Day reflect a commitment to integrating technology and entrepreneurship into the curriculum, preparing students for future challenges.

While the fair highlights educational initiatives, it also faces challenges, such as the limited presence of children’s literature publishers, as noted in previous discussions. Despite these challenges, the fair continues to serve as a vital cultural and educational hub, drawing attention to the importance of reading and learning in Serbian society.

The School Day at the International Book Fair in Belgrade demonstrates the ongoing efforts to enhance educational practices and promote a culture of reading. By showcasing innovative projects and emphasizing the role of education in understanding diversity, the event contributes to the broader goal of fostering an inclusive and knowledgeable society.
