Beldocs Festival Showcases Global Documentaries in Kragujevac

The Beldocs festival, a prominent event in the Serbian cultural calendar, is currently hosting its “Beldocs Eho” tour at the Students’ Cultural Center in Kragujevac. Running from October 26 to October 29, 2026, the festival is showcasing a series of award-winning long documentary films from around the globe. This event continues the festival’s mission to educate and engage audiences across Serbia, offering a rich selection of both local and international films.

Since its inception in 2011, the Beldocs festival has played a significant role in promoting documentary filmmaking in Serbia. This year’s edition, the 19th, features films that have been recognized at prestigious international film festivals, underscoring the festival’s commitment to presenting high-quality content. The screenings are taking place in the Kontakt Gallery of the Students’ Cultural Center, with free entry for all attendees.

One of the highlights of the festival is the screening of “Free City Christiania” by Danish director Karl Friis Forchhammer. The documentary explores the history of Christiania, a self-proclaimed autonomous neighborhood in Copenhagen that emerged in 1971 when young people occupied abandoned military barracks. The film delves into themes of radical democracy and creative freedom, while also addressing issues such as violence and external pressures. It has been featured in notable festivals such as CPH:DOX 2026 and the Millennium Docs Against Gravity 2026.

Another notable documentary is “80 Angry Journalists” by András Földes and Anna Kis, which documents the disintegration of Hungary’s largest independent newsroom in 2020 due to political pressure. The film captures the journalists’ struggle to rebuild a new media outlet amidst internal tensions and exhaustion. This documentary has been showcased at festivals including DocsBarcelona 2026 and Munich IDF 2026.

The festival also presents “Afraid of Beauty” by Jelena Medić from Bosnia and Herzegovina. Set in an evening acting school, the film features mature women sharing personal stories while working on texts from Rumena Bužarovska’s collection “My Husband.” Through intimate dialogues, the film addresses the legacies of war, patriarchy, and romantic narratives. It was part of the Beldocs IDFF 2026 lineup.

The final film in the series, “The Mysterious Parcel” by Norwegian director Silje Evensmo Jacobsen, follows a family in Valldal, Norway, as they investigate the origins of a mysterious Christmas package that has appeared on their doorstep for over two decades. The documentary, which combines elements of mystery and family dynamics, has been featured at Thessaloniki DF 2026 and Docaviv – The Tel Aviv IDFF 2026.

The Beldocs Eho tour in Kragujevac is a testament to the growing appreciation for documentary films in Serbia, providing a platform for diverse narratives and fostering cultural exchange. The festival’s ability to attract international talent and present compelling stories from around the world highlights its significance in the global documentary film landscape. As audiences gather in Kragujevac, the festival continues to inspire and challenge viewers, contributing to the broader cultural dialogue in Serbia and beyond.
