Students’ List Wins Serbian Elections, Signals Political Shift

In a significant development in Serbian politics, the Students’ List has emerged victorious in the recent parliamentary elections, marking a pivotal shift in the country’s political landscape. Aleksandar Vučić, the leader of the “Aleksandar Vučić – Ujedinjena Srbija” list, conceded defeat, acknowledging that his list had lost the elections. The Students’ List is projected to secure approximately 135 mandates, while “Ujedinjena Srbija” is expected to win around 105 mandates, according to preliminary estimates.

The elections, held on October 25, 2026, have been closely monitored, with the Center for Free Elections and Democracy (CeSID) providing regular updates on voter turnout and initial projections. Celebrations erupted among supporters of the Students’ List in major Serbian cities such as Belgrade, Novi Sad, and Niš, as they took to the streets to mark their victory.

Miloš Jovanović, the leader of the “Autentična desnica” list, which did not secure any seats, congratulated the Students’ List on their success, acknowledging their likely role in taking over the reins of government. Similarly, Milorad Dodik, President of the Alliance of Independent Social Democrats (SNSD), extended his congratulations, emphasizing continued cooperation between Republika Srpska and Serbia.

Dejan Šoškić, a candidate from the Students’ List, called for a peaceful celebration of their victory, urging citizens to maintain order and avoid provocations. He expressed gratitude to voters for their support and emphasized the importance of respecting the will of the people, which he described as a triumph of courage over fear and hope over indifference.

The preliminary results released by CeSID indicate that the Students’ List has garnered 53% of the votes, translating to 139 mandates, while “Ujedinjena Srbija” received 39.3%, equating to 104 mandates. Other parties, such as the “Ivica Dačić – Faktor stabilnosti” list and the Vojvodina Hungarian Alliance, secured smaller shares of the vote.

Radomir Saičić, another candidate from the Students’ List, addressed supporters, highlighting the significance of the election results as a reflection of the people’s desire for change. He underscored the responsibility that comes with victory and called for unity among citizens to ensure the future of Serbia is shaped by all its people.

The political landscape in Serbia has long been dominated by Aleksandar Vučić and his party, with previous elections marred by controversies and allegations of unfair practices. The Students’ List’s victory represents a departure from this trend, potentially heralding a new era in Serbian governance. However, the final official results are still pending confirmation, which could impact the narrative of a decisive victory.

The outcome of the elections may lead to potential unrest or backlash from supporters of the losing party, which could result in instability. As the Students’ List prepares to assume governance, the focus will be on how they navigate these challenges and implement their vision for Serbia’s future.

The elections were held under the scrutiny of international observers, including the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) and the European Parliament, ensuring adherence to democratic standards. The presence of these observers highlights the importance of a transparent electoral process for Serbia’s political and international standing.

As the political scene in Serbia evolves, the implications of the Students’ List’s victory will become clearer, particularly in terms of future governance and Serbia’s relationship with the European Union.
