President Aleksandar Vučić has announced a significant investment for the construction of a new maternity hospital in Niš, Serbia. The project, which is estimated to cost between 70 and 80 million euros, aims to enhance healthcare facilities in the region. The new facility will span approximately 15,000 square meters and include 405 parking spaces, as detailed by Vučić during his visit to the University Clinical Center in Niš.
Emphasizing the importance of local involvement, Vučić stated that domestic architects and construction companies would be integral to the project. “It is important to me that we involve our architects,” he said, highlighting that the funds allocated for the construction would benefit local companies and contribute to the national budget through taxes.
The project, designed by a firm based in Novi Sad and Belgrade, is expected to significantly improve the conditions for pregnant women, mothers, and newborns in Niš and the surrounding southern Serbian regions. The new maternity hospital is part of a broader initiative to upgrade healthcare infrastructure, which has been a focal point of Vučić’s administration. Previously, the construction of the Clinical Center in Niš was highlighted as a major development in the area.
During his visit, Vučić recalled the transformation of the site from an open field to a modern clinical center, which was completed in four years. He expressed optimism that the new maternity hospital would be one of the most advanced and aesthetically pleasing in Serbia, covering an expanded area of around 21,000 to 22,000 square meters.
The project also includes plans to relocate an existing helipad to facilitate the construction, with the opening of bids for construction scheduled for October 13. Darko Glišić, the Minister for Public Investments, indicated that if there are no objections, contracts could be finalized quickly, allowing for the groundbreaking to occur by the end of the year.
This development is part of Serbia’s ongoing efforts to improve healthcare services, particularly in underserved regions. However, the timeline for the project’s completion and its actual impact on healthcare services remain uncertain. Additionally, there may be concerns regarding the transparency of the bidding process for construction contracts.
