STADA, a German pharmaceutical company, has announced a significant investment of 20 million euros to enhance production capacities at its Hemofarm facility in Vršac, Serbia. This latest investment is part of STADA’s broader strategy to expand its manufacturing capabilities and underscores Serbia’s growing importance within the company’s global operations. The announcement was made by STADA Group’s General Director, Piter Goldšmit, during a press conference in Belgrade.
Goldšmit highlighted that Serbia has become a central hub for international employment within the STADA Group. “We have invested hundreds of millions in recent years, and we have just received approval from STADA’s Global Executive Board to invest an additional 20 million euros in Vršac. This will increase production and build new manufacturing facilities, showcasing our commitment to the future,” Goldšmit stated.
The Hemofarm facility, acquired by STADA 20 years ago, employs 4,500 people and operates under the highest European standards. Over the past two decades, Hemofarm has evolved from a company focused primarily on generic drugs to one that also offers innovative and specialized generic medications, as well as consumer health products, including supplements. Goldšmit emphasized the critical role of generic drugs in Serbia, noting that 70 to 80 percent of daily prescriptions in the country are for generics, with Hemofarm being the largest supplier.
STADA’s investment strategy in Serbia is not limited to production expansion. The company has also been focusing on developing new products and enhancing its research and development capabilities. Goldšmit pointed out that products manufactured in Serbia are exported to all European Union countries, the Middle East, and other markets, with Germany being the largest market for these products. “In Serbia, we produce not only to quality standards that are high enough for Germany, which has the highest quality standards, but everything we produce here meets full European Union standards,” he said.
The significance of Hemofarm as an employer in the region was also highlighted, with Goldšmit noting that Serbia has become a center for international jobs within the group. Beyond job creation, STADA and Hemofarm contribute to society through initiatives such as the Hemofarm Foundation and organ donation and transplantation support programs.
STADA’s commitment to Serbia is reflected in its continued investment in the country, which has amounted to hundreds of millions of euros over the past few years. The company applies consistent standards in environmental protection, social responsibility, and business compliance across all countries where it operates, including Serbia, Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States, Vietnam, and China.
This investment comes at a time when the pharmaceutical industry in Serbia is experiencing growth, spurred by increasing foreign investments.
