Serbia has achieved a significant milestone in its burgeoning tech sector with the emergence of its first unicorn company, Ominimo, which has reached a market valuation of $1.6 billion. This achievement follows the company’s successful closure of a Series B funding round, which included investment from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). Ominimo, a company specializing in next-generation insurance products, leverages artificial intelligence and advanced data analysis to enhance risk assessment and insurance policy pricing.
Founded in 2024 by Dušan Komar and Laslo Horvat from Serbia, along with Denis Vajnbender from Germany, Ominimo has rapidly expanded its operations across four European markets. The company plans to further extend its reach into six additional EU markets and the United States within the next year. Ominimo’s growth trajectory is underscored by its nearly one million users and an annual business volume exceeding $350 million, making it one of the fastest-growing insurtech companies globally.
Dušan Komar, one of the founders and the current director of Ominimo, highlighted the broader implications of this milestone for the Serbian startup ecosystem. He noted that the achievement of unicorn status could attract more international investment funds to Serbia, enhancing the prospects for the emergence of new startups in the region. Komar expressed the company’s commitment to retaining and nurturing Serbian talent, particularly in the fields of artificial intelligence and finance, without the need for these professionals to seek opportunities abroad.
Ominimo’s success is particularly noteworthy given the limited emergence of unicorns in the Balkan region. The company’s profitability since its inception is a rarity in the global startup scene, where many companies operate at a loss for years to fuel growth. Bruno Lusic from the EBRD praised Ominimo as one of the most impressive insurtech companies they have evaluated, citing its exceptional growth and strong business foundations.
The company employs over 100 people, with a significant proportion being data scientists and software engineers based in Serbia. These employees, many of whom are young and highly skilled mathematicians and programmers, work in Ominimo’s development centers in Novi Sad and Belgrade. The team includes medalists from prestigious international competitions, such as the International Mathematical Olympiad.
Beyond its business operations, Ominimo invests in the development of future generations. The company has sponsored the Serbian team’s participation in the International Mathematical Olympiad and organized the first Ominimo Hackathon in collaboration with the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Belgrade. This event resulted in employment opportunities for 30 successful students. Ominimo also donates IT equipment to universities and provides scholarships to top students in Novi Sad and Belgrade.
As Ominimo continues to expand, it faces potential challenges, including sustaining its rapid growth and profitability in new markets. The company’s strategic focus on innovation and talent development positions it well to navigate these challenges and maintain its competitive edge in the global insurtech landscape.
