Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has announced three new initiatives aimed at enhancing cooperation among Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) countries. The announcement came during a meeting in Belgrade marking the 65th anniversary of the first NAM conference, which took place in the city in 1961. The initiatives are designed to strengthen ties among the member countries and will be showcased at the upcoming EXPO 2027 in Belgrade.
The first initiative, titled “Non-Aligned Digital,” focuses on bolstering knowledge and capacity in digital communications and security infrastructure. According to Vučić, this initiative will facilitate the exchange of knowledge and technology, collaboration in artificial intelligence development, and offer scholarships to young engineers from NAM countries. These engineers are expected to return to their home countries and contribute to the development of national systems.
The second initiative is a film festival dedicated to the Non-Aligned Movement, which will be held in Belgrade. This festival aims to foster cultural dialogue and collaboration among filmmakers, cultural institutions, and creative communities from NAM member states. Vučić emphasized that the festival would serve as a platform for cultural exchange and would be further strengthened during EXPO 2027.
The third initiative involves an international seminar for young diplomats from NAM countries. This seminar is intended as a venue for the next generation of diplomats to exchange ideas and establish lasting professional connections. Vučić highlighted the importance of these initiatives in promoting dialogue and cooperation among NAM countries, stating that they reflect the movement’s enduring commitment to multilateralism and equality.
Vučić’s announcement underscores Serbia’s active role in the Non-Aligned Movement, which was originally established to promote peace and cooperation among countries that did not wish to align with major power blocs during the Cold War. The movement remains relevant today, as it continues to advocate for a fair and equitable international order.
The initiatives are expected to be a significant feature of EXPO 2027, which will be the first EXPO held in Southeastern Europe in the 21st century. With more than 140 countries participating, the EXPO presents an opportunity for Serbia and other NAM countries to showcase their achievements and foster new business collaborations. Vučić expressed hope that the EXPO would allow visitors to experience the energy, creativity, and hospitality of the region, as well as to meet young people, companies, scientists, artists, and athletes from Serbia and beyond.
In his speech, Vučić also reflected on the historical significance of the Non-Aligned Movement, recalling the courage of its founding leaders who, during a time of geopolitical division, created a path of independence, dialogue, and cooperation. He noted that while the world has changed since 1961, many of the challenges faced then, such as geopolitical tensions and economic disruptions, remain relevant today. Vučić argued that the principles of the Non-Aligned Movement—sovereign equality, respect for international law, and peaceful dispute resolution—are more important than ever in the current international climate.
The effectiveness and implementation of these initiatives will depend on international cooperation among NAM countries. While there is optimism about the potential impact of these initiatives, their success will ultimately be measured by the tangible outcomes they produce in terms of enhanced cooperation and development among member states.
