Novi Sad’s New Train Stop Faces Criticism Over Safety and Accessibility

A new train stop has been inaugurated in Novi Sad on Rumenački put, approximately 30 minutes from the city center by public transport. This development comes amid ongoing issues with the city’s main railway station, which has been criticized for its lack of functionality and safety, particularly following a tragic incident in 2024 when a roof collapse resulted in 16 fatalities. The new stop, however, has not been met with fanfare or a formal opening ceremony, and its introduction has raised several concerns among commuters.

The opening of the new stop has led to the discontinuation of the free bus service that previously connected passengers to the Petrovaradin railway station. Now, all public transport to the new stop requires payment, adding an additional burden on commuters. The stop itself lacks essential amenities such as cafes, shops, and clear signage, which has left many passengers confused and disoriented. Reports indicate that the area surrounding the stop is barren, with only newly constructed buildings nearby, and a congested parking lot filled with cars.

Passengers have expressed frustration over the lack of clear directions and the absence of staff to provide necessary information. The station features only a single platform for a city with nearly half a million residents, and the absence of ticket counters, screens, or directional signs has been noted. The only available information about train schedules is printed on papers posted around the station, which are reportedly different from the usual schedules.

In addition to these logistical issues, the travel time to Belgrade has increased significantly. Previously, the journey could be completed in 36 minutes using the high-speed “Sokol” train. However, recent changes have extended the travel time by at least 20 minutes, with some trains taking even longer. This has added to the confusion and dissatisfaction among passengers, as many are unsure of the train routes and stops.

The lack of communication and clarity has led to a chaotic experience for many travelers. Passengers have been seen struggling with ticket machines, and there have been instances where language barriers have exacerbated the situation. One elderly passenger was observed having difficulty understanding how to use the ticket machine, resulting in a scene where multiple people attempted to assist him.

The new train stop’s opening has not been accompanied by any official commentary or plans from local authorities or transportation officials, leaving many questions unanswered about the future of train service efficiency and passenger safety in Novi Sad. The broader implications for the city’s transportation infrastructure remain uncertain, as the main railway station continues to face criticism and the new stop does not appear to offer a comprehensive solution to existing issues.

Overall, while the new train stop in Novi Sad represents an attempt to address transportation needs, it has highlighted significant gaps in planning and execution, leading to a challenging experience for commuters. The situation underscores the need for improved infrastructure and clearer communication to ensure that public transport meets the needs of the city’s residents effectively.
