A new science and technology park in Niš, Serbia, has been inaugurated, marking a significant development in the region’s economic landscape. The facility, which cost approximately 30 million euros, is expected to triple the capacity of the existing park and provide state-of-the-art space for startups, companies, and laboratories. This expansion aims to attract new investors and foster the growth of innovative enterprises in Niš, a city known for its burgeoning innovation ecosystem.
The construction of the new complex involved a 25 million euro investment, with the total project value, including equipment, reaching around 30 million euros. The park spans over 18,000 square meters, offering about 10,000 square meters for companies and laboratories, doubling the space available in the previous facility. The need for expansion became evident after the original park reached full capacity in less than a year, highlighting the region’s rapid development in the tech sector.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, who visited the site, emphasized the park’s potential to transform Niš’s economic profile by attracting new investors and creating jobs. “This will bring more investors, ensure smart startups, higher salaries in Niš, and more jobs,” Vučić stated during the visit. The first companies are expected to move into the new park by the end of the year, which is anticipated to boost local employment and increase wages.
The park’s expansion is part of a broader strategy to enhance Serbia’s economic growth and attract foreign investment. The development of the innovation ecosystem in Niš has been a focal point for both local and national government initiatives, aiming to position the city as a hub for high-tech industries and innovative entrepreneurship. The new facility is strategically located near technical faculties in Niš, facilitating collaboration between academia and the private sector.
The park will include more than 10 specialized laboratories for development and testing, flexible workspaces, and a modern startup center with over 300 square meters of coworking space. Additionally, it will offer more than 250 parking spaces for members and visitors. This infrastructure is designed to support a wide range of research and development activities, catering to various types of teams and companies.
The presence of Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) in Niš underscores the city’s growing appeal to major tech companies. The expansion of the park is expected to attract further interest from both domestic and international firms considering establishing development centers in the region. The Serbian Development Agency and the Ministry of Economy are actively working to draw new businesses to Niš, leveraging the park’s enhanced capabilities.
In addition to the science and technology park, the Serbian government has allocated 10 million euros for the construction of new student dormitories in Niš. These facilities will increase the current capacity by approximately 50 percent, accommodating an additional 404 students. The new dormitories, expected to be completed by the end of the year or early next year, will feature private bathrooms in each room, setting a higher standard compared to many European countries.
The inauguration of the new park is a significant milestone in Serbia’s efforts to modernize its economy and foster a knowledge-based job market. As the park begins operations, it is poised to play a crucial role in driving economic development in southern Serbia, offering new opportunities for young professionals and contributing to the region’s overall growth.
