Swiss MP Imark’s Visit Boosts Serbia-Switzerland Relations Ahead of EXPO 2027

Swiss parliamentarian Kristijan Imark’s recent visit to Serbia has underscored the strengthening of bilateral relations between the two countries, with a focus on enhancing cooperation in scientific, technological, and economic sectors. Imark, a member of the Swiss National Council and co-chair of the Parliamentary Friendship Group Switzerland-Serbia, expressed his admiration for Serbia’s hospitality and development potential during his visit. He highlighted the significant opportunities for deepening ties, particularly with the upcoming EXPO 2027 in Belgrade.

Imark’s visit included discussions with Serbian officials such as Prime Minister Ana Brnabić and Foreign Minister Marko Đurić. These talks covered various topics, including the economy, energy, European integration, regional stability, security, and human rights. Imark emphasized the importance of open dialogue, stating, “Trust does not arise from avoiding dialogue, but from the willingness to openly discuss everything.”

The Parliamentary Friendship Group Switzerland-Serbia has seen a notable increase in membership, becoming the second-largest friendship group in the Swiss parliament. This growth reflects a rising interest in Serbia, according to Imark. He noted that both countries value independence and self-determination, drawing parallels between Switzerland’s traditional neutrality and Serbia’s military neutrality, despite their different historical foundations.

Imark’s visit also included a tour of the Science and Technology Park in Belgrade, where he was impressed by young entrepreneurs transforming innovative ideas into successful businesses. He highlighted the presence of hundreds of Swiss companies in Serbia and the development of the IT sector, supported by Switzerland’s backing of science and technology parks, entrepreneurship, and dual education.

Reflecting on Serbia’s rich historical heritage, Imark visited the Belgrade Fortress and the archaeological site of Viminacium. He described Belgrade as a city that has always been a significant crossroads in Europe, now evolving into a modern metropolis focused on the future.

Imark also emphasized the importance of the upcoming EXPO 2027 in Belgrade, noting Switzerland’s early commitment to participate. He expressed confidence that the exhibition would provide Serbia with an excellent opportunity to showcase its creativity, hospitality, and ambition to the world. Imark plans to return to Serbia with colleagues and friends to attend the EXPO, anticipating the presence of the new Swiss president at the event.

The visit and subsequent discussions are part of a broader effort to reinforce the longstanding diplomatic relationship between Serbia and Switzerland, which celebrates its 110th anniversary this year. Previous interactions between officials from both countries have centered on innovation and economic collaboration, laying the groundwork for future partnerships.

Imark’s visit comes at a time when Serbia is preparing for upcoming elections, with the potential to influence public perception of the country’s international relations and economic prospects. The strengthening of ties with Switzerland, as highlighted by Imark, could play a role in shaping Serbia’s future trajectory in these areas.
