Students across Serbia are celebrating a significant electoral victory for the Students’ List, marking a pivotal moment in the country’s political landscape. Gatherings are taking place in multiple cities, including Novi Sad and Belgrade, where students and supporters are coming together to commemorate their success in the recent parliamentary elections.
In Novi Sad, celebrations began at the university campus, where tractors led a procession of students and citizens from the Faculty of Agriculture to the Banovina building. Hundreds of people joined the procession, which was organized by the students and members of the Novi Sad Choir Network. The event highlighted the community’s support for the Students’ List and their call for unity and non-violence. Ilija Srdanović, the leader of the Students’ List, addressed the crowd, urging restraint and emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace. “The electoral process is not yet complete. The results need to be confirmed, and it is crucial that no one jeopardizes this victory,” Srdanović stated, calling for calm across Serbia, particularly in Belgrade.
In Belgrade, the celebration at Slavija Square is characterized by music and a festive atmosphere. A stage has been set up where DJs are playing music, and the event is expected to continue until midnight. Unlike typical political rallies, no speeches are planned, underscoring the celebratory and unifying nature of the gathering. Mirjana Nikolić, the rector of the University of Arts, described the event as a cathartic experience, reflecting on the students’ dedicated efforts throughout the election campaign. “This is not an ordinary day. It’s a day after a well-deserved victory, backed by thousands of kilometers traveled and countless households visited,” she remarked.
The celebrations are not limited to Novi Sad and Belgrade. In Kragujevac, students and citizens gathered at Đački Square in front of the First Gymnasium, where they danced and celebrated their electoral success. The event was organized through social media and messaging platforms, with local choirs joining the festivities. The atmosphere was vibrant, with music, fireworks, and the waving of flags symbolizing the triumph of the Students’ List.
In Niš, a large crowd assembled at the central square to celebrate, with music, whistles, and vuvuzelas creating a lively environment. The event was marked by the removal of banners associated with the opposing political party, which was met with cheers from the attendees. Prior to the celebration, a group of motorcyclists from the Students’ List visited the local police station to seek clarification on an incident involving an attack on their members. They expressed their intention to continue gathering in greater numbers to demand accountability for the attack.
The electoral victory of the Students’ List, which campaigned on issues such as media freedom and political accountability, represents a significant shift in Serbia’s political dynamics. The movement has been characterized by its grassroots organization and widespread support among young people, who have been actively involved in advocating for change. The celebrations across Serbia reflect not only the joy of victory but also the hope for a new chapter in the country’s governance, driven by the values of transparency and reform.
