Serbian Prosecutor’s Car Arson Sparks Political Intimidation Concerns

The vehicle of Vukašin Vujičić, a prosecutor from Valjevo, Serbia, was set on fire in an incident that opposition parties are labeling as a politically motivated act of intimidation. Vujičić is known for his resistance to external pressures and is currently involved in prosecuting a case against a criminal group with alleged ties to the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS). The arson attack has prompted calls from opposition parties, including the Nova Demokratska stranka Srbije (Novi DSS) and the Democratic Party (DS), for immediate action and accountability from the authorities.

The Novi DSS has demanded that the authorities quickly identify and disclose the perpetrators behind the attack, emphasizing that the burning of Vujičić’s car is not merely an act of vandalism but a part of a broader strategy of intimidation. They highlighted that Vujičić has been subjected to pressures, targeting, and threats, particularly due to his role in prosecuting a criminal group led by an individual closely associated with the SNS. The party’s statement underscored the need for transparency and accountability, urging the public to question who issued threats, who targeted Vujičić, and who believed they could intimidate him without consequence.

Srđan Milivojević, the president of the Democratic Party, described the incident as a component of the government’s intimidation policy. He criticized the concentration of power in the hands of President Aleksandar Vučić, suggesting that orders for such attacks, as well as the protection of those who carry them out, originate from the central power structure in Serbia. Milivojević asserted that the attack on Vujičić’s vehicle was not coincidental, linking it to Vujičić’s public opposition to threats against the judiciary by Vučić. Milivojević further warned that increased repression would only lead to a more challenging end to Vučić’s rule.

The Valjevo police have confirmed that Vujičić’s car was set on fire and announced that a criminal complaint would be filed against an unknown perpetrator for endangering safety. Vujičić himself has expressed suspicion that the arson was related to the legal proceedings he is handling.

This incident comes amid growing concerns over political intimidation and the integrity of the judiciary in Serbia. The opposition’s response reflects broader apprehensions about the state of democratic institutions and the rule of law in the country. The attack on Vujičić’s vehicle is seen as part of a pattern of intimidation against those who challenge the current regime, raising questions about the independence of the judiciary and the extent of political influence over legal processes in Serbia.
