President Aleksandar Vučić of Serbia has announced a series of infrastructure projects in Sombor, aimed at improving local services and attracting investment to the region. Among the key developments is the construction of a new kindergarten at the “Vera Gucunja” Preschool Institution, which is expected to be completed in less than a year. This project is anticipated to eliminate waiting lists for children in Sombor, addressing a significant demand for early childhood education facilities.
In addition to the kindergarten, Vučić outlined plans for a bypass around Sombor, which is intended to enhance connectivity and ease traffic congestion. This infrastructure improvement is part of a broader strategy to link Sombor to the main highway by 2030. Vučić emphasized the transformative potential of these projects, stating that they would “change everything in Sombor,” by attracting investors, facilitating tourism, and improving communication and connectivity for local residents and businesses.
A significant component of the announced projects is the development of a new hospital facility, with an allocation of 20 million euros for its reconstruction. Vučić highlighted the importance of modernizing healthcare infrastructure, noting that the hospital would be equipped with advanced medical technology, including MRI machines and scanners, expected to arrive within two months. This initiative is part of a broader effort to improve healthcare services across Serbia, addressing long-standing challenges in the sector.
The president also mentioned ongoing efforts to improve water supply and sewage systems in Sombor and surrounding villages, acknowledging the substantial financial investment required and the expected timeline of two to three years for completion. Vučić stressed the importance of attracting a large investor to the region, which he believes would significantly boost the local economy and provide better employment opportunities.
During his visit to the construction site of the new kindergarten, Vučić was accompanied by Dejan Vuk Stanković, the Minister of Education. The project, valued at 389 million dinars, is largely funded by the Capital Investments Fund of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina, with the city contributing 40 million dinars. The kindergarten is planned to cover approximately 1,700 square meters, providing much-needed space for early childhood education.
Vučić’s announcements come amid broader infrastructure development efforts across Serbia, as the government seeks to enhance regional connectivity and economic growth. The president has been actively promoting similar projects in other parts of the country, including road and railway improvements, as well as new healthcare facilities.
Despite the ambitious plans, there is public skepticism regarding the timely completion and effectiveness of these projects in attracting investment and improving local conditions. The success of these initiatives will likely depend on efficient project management and sustained government support. As Serbia continues to focus on infrastructure development, the outcomes of these projects in Sombor could serve as a model for similar efforts in other regions.
