The provincial government of Vojvodina has announced a series of initiatives aimed at improving the social and economic conditions of the Roma community. During a recent meeting between Željko Radu, acting director of the Office for Roma Inclusion, and Sandra Božić, Deputy Prime Minister of the Provincial Government, the commitment to advancing the Roma community’s status through various educational and economic programs was reaffirmed.
The meeting, which also marked the 20th anniversary of the Office for Roma Inclusion, underscored the importance of sustained investment in education as a pivotal factor for the successful integration of young Roma into society. The discussion highlighted the need for continued support for students attending classes in the Romani language and the creation of additional opportunities for their academic and professional development.
The provincial government’s strategy includes enhancing the economic position of Roma women by supporting female entrepreneurship. This initiative is seen as a crucial step toward strengthening the entire Roma community, with a focus on fostering economic independence and greater societal participation for women.
Moreover, the meeting explored the possibility of establishing local and regional centers for the Office for Roma Inclusion across Vojvodina. The aim is to make support services more accessible at the local level and to improve collaboration with local government units and other relevant institutions. This decentralized approach is expected to enhance the effectiveness of programs and services offered to the Roma community.
Sandra Božić emphasized the provincial government’s dedication to implementing measures that improve the Roma community’s position, highlighting the importance of a partnership approach in addressing the challenges faced by the Roma population. The meeting was also attended by provincial MP Jelena Jovanović and Stevan Jovanović, a representative of the National Council of the Roma National Minority, who expressed support for initiatives aimed at further strengthening institutional support for the Roma and enhancing their social inclusion.
Participants agreed that education, economic empowerment, identity preservation, and the development of institutional support are key prerequisites for creating a society of equal opportunities. In such a society, the Roma would have the chance to fully contribute to community and societal development.
The provincial government’s ongoing commitment to these initiatives reflects a broader recognition of the need for targeted policies that address the unique challenges faced by the Roma community. By focusing on education and economic empowerment, the government aims to break the cycle of poverty and marginalization that has historically affected the Roma.
The emphasis on education is particularly significant, as it is seen as a gateway to better opportunities and a means of achieving social mobility. By investing in the education of young Roma, the government hopes to equip them with the skills and knowledge necessary to compete in the modern job market and participate fully in society.
Economic empowerment, especially for Roma women, is another critical area of focus. By supporting female entrepreneurship, the government aims to create pathways for economic independence and self-sufficiency, which are essential for the long-term stability and prosperity of the Roma community.
The establishment of local centers for the Office for Roma Inclusion is expected to facilitate more effective outreach and service delivery. By bringing services closer to the communities
