The EXPO caravan, known as the “Pavilion of Games,” made a significant stop in Sombor, Serbia, as part of its promotional tour for the upcoming EXPO 2027 in Belgrade. This event, held at Trg Svetog Đorđa, offered visitors a glimpse into the rich cultural and sports heritage of Sombor, a city renowned for its natural beauty and vibrant traditions. The event featured a diverse array of activities, including traditional crafts, musical performances, and a celebration of Sombor’s sporting achievements, particularly highlighting the contributions of NBA star Nikola Jokić.
Mayor Antonio Ratković expressed pride in Sombor hosting the EXPO caravan, emphasizing the city’s cultural diversity and green spaces. He noted that the EXPO 2027, which will feature participation from over 140 countries, provides an invaluable opportunity for Sombor and other local municipalities to showcase their unique offerings to an international audience. Ratković stated, “It is a great honor for all Sombor residents that the EXPO caravan is in our city today. Sombor is a city of culture, greenery, and multiculturalism.”
Rastko Andrić, the Director of Operations for EXPO 2027, also addressed attendees, underscoring Sombor’s distinctive charm and the city’s contributions to the global stage, notably through Jokić’s basketball success. Andrić remarked, “Sombor has an authentic story and much to show the world. We recognize Sombor for its carriages, wide streets, greenery, rich culture, art, and tradition.”
The event also highlighted Sombor’s natural attractions, such as the Special Nature Reserve “Gornje Podunavlje,” and the region’s cultural landmarks like Bački Monoštor and Bezdan. The EXPO 2027 aims to be a global business platform, offering opportunities for new business collaborations and promoting Serbia’s diverse cultural and economic potential.
Mirjana Avramović, manager of the school program at EXPO 2027, emphasized the educational aspect of the event, inviting students from across Serbia to participate in what she described as a “great classroom of the world and the future.” The educational visits are scheduled from May 17 to June 25, 2027, providing students with unique learning experiences.
Jovan Uzelac, Director of the Sombor Tourist Organization, welcomed visitors to explore the city’s rich offerings, including its famous paprika, wine, and tamburitza music. He highlighted Sombor’s reputation for cultural events and its picturesque landscapes, which include forests and canals.
The EXPO caravan’s visit to Sombor is part of a broader initiative to prepare for the EXPO 2027 in Belgrade, which will run from May 15 to August 15, 2027. The event, themed “Play for Humanity: Sport and Music for All,” is expected to attract over four million visitors, providing a platform for Serbia to present its cultural and economic strengths on the global stage. The EXPO will feature the “Serbian House” pavilion, showcasing the country’s cultural diversity, tourism potential, and gastronomy.
The EXPO 2027 is anticipated to foster cultural exchange and economic growth, positioning Serbia as a hub for international collaboration and innovation. The event underscores the country’s commitment to leveraging its cultural heritage and sporting achievements to enhance its global standing and attract visitors from around the world.
