The Belgrade Public Prosecutor’s Office has confirmed that Mayor Aleksandar Šapić voluntarily surrendered his firearm at his residence following a recent incident that involved allegations of violence. According to an official statement from the prosecutor’s office, the firearm, which Šapić legally owned, was seized in accordance with police law and not as evidence of a crime. This development comes amidst a prediscovery investigation against Šapić for suspected serious bodily harm and violent behavior involving Tatjana Mićić.
The incident in question occurred on September 28, 2026, and involved a confrontation between Šapić and Mićić, a councilor from the “Kreni-promeni” movement. Mićić alleged that Šapić physically attacked her, a claim that Šapić has denied, stating instead that he did not assault Mićić and has called for an investigation to uncover the truth.
The timeline of events surrounding the surrender of the firearm has raised questions due to discrepancies between the official police report and the subsequent findings by the prosecutor’s office. The police report from the Novi Beograd station indicated that Šapić was released from custody after the legally prescribed time and mechanisms were exhausted, and that he then voluntarily surrendered his firearm at his residence under police escort. However, the prosecutor’s office noted inconsistencies in the timeline of the firearm’s seizure, which were not in agreement with the police report’s details.
These discrepancies prompted the prosecutor’s office to contact police officials to verify the published information and clarify all relevant circumstances. During this process, a photograph of the confirmation of temporarily seized items, which was not included in the initial police report, was provided to the prosecutor’s office. This photograph revealed that the timing of the firearm’s seizure did not align with the events as described in the official police report, indicating a lack of consistency between the two official documents.
As a result of these findings, the Belgrade Public Prosecutor’s Office has initiated a separate case to determine whether there is any basis for suspecting criminal conduct by the police officers involved. The prosecutor’s office will inform the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Internal Control Sector to undertake actions within their jurisdiction.
The broader context of this incident includes ongoing concerns about violence and misconduct among political figures in Serbia. The initiation of a prediscovery investigation against Šapić reflects these concerns, as it involves allegations of serious bodily harm and violent behavior. The investigation is set to gather and analyze all available evidence to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The situation has drawn attention to the reliability of police reports and the handling of such incidents by law enforcement in Serbia. The discrepancies in the timeline of the firearm’s surrender and the subsequent actions by the prosecutor’s office highlight the need for transparency and accuracy in official documentation. The outcome of the investigation and any potential legal proceedings could have significant implications for Šapić’s political career and the public’s trust in the legal and law enforcement systems in Serbia.
