Magdalena Kostić, a journalist with the Media and Reform Center Niš, was reportedly surrounded and intimidated by four men while covering an event at a market in the Durlan neighborhood of Niš, Serbia. According to the Independent Journalists’ Association of Serbia (NUNS), the men demanded that Kostić leave the public area, questioned her identity, and the purpose of her filming. Despite showing her press credentials, the men accused her of provocation and continued their aggressive behavior, which led her to feel unsafe and unable to complete her journalistic duties.
The incident occurred as Kostić was reporting on pre-election activities at the market, where booths for the Students’ List and the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) were set up. After speaking with citizens at the Students’ List booth, she attempted to conduct interviews at the SNS booth but was obstructed by the men. NUNS has condemned the intimidation, emphasizing that such actions are unacceptable and pose a serious threat to press freedom, particularly during an election campaign.
The case has been reported to the police, who have informed the public prosecutor. NUNS has called for the police to promptly identify and hold accountable those involved in the intimidation. The organization stresses that journalists have the right to report on matters of public interest, including political activities, without interference or intimidation. They have urged political parties and participants in the electoral process to clearly communicate to their members and supporters that pressuring journalists is unacceptable.
NUNS also highlighted the importance of media freedom during election campaigns, as it ensures that citizens receive timely and objective information. The association has pledged to monitor the authorities’ handling of the case and to support Kostić and her media outlet.
