United States President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin engaged in a “constructive and quite frank” phone conversation as part of renewed diplomatic efforts to negotiate peace in Ukraine. This development follows visits by U.S. special envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff to both Russia and Ukraine, aimed at discussing a proposal to end the ongoing conflict.
The hour-long phone call, as described by Yury Ushakov, Putin’s foreign affairs adviser, focused on the current state of the conflict and Russia’s military objectives. Ushakov stated that Putin reassured Trump that Russia has no aggressive intentions towards Europe, including NATO member states. Despite the diplomatic outreach, the situation on the ground remains tense, with both Russian and Ukrainian forces resuming strikes after a brief ceasefire.
The recent diplomatic initiatives have not yet resulted in a breakthrough. Ukrainian officials reported that Russian attacks on Tuesday resulted in the deaths of at least five civilians and injuries to 25 others in Kyiv. In retaliation, Ukrainian forces targeted Russian-annexed Crimea, reportedly killing five people. Russian officials also reported casualties in the Bryansk and Kursk regions due to Ukrainian strikes.
The conflict, which began in February 2022 with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, has been marked by periodic attempts at diplomacy, often met with skepticism due to persistent hostilities and a lack of significant progress. Trump’s administration has prioritized ending the war, with Trump previously claiming he could achieve a settlement within 24 hours—a statement he later walked back as an exaggeration.
The White House has not commented on the phone call, leaving some uncertainty about the effectiveness of the proposed peace efforts. The ongoing violence underscores the urgency of finding a resolution, as civilian casualties continue to mount. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for the U.S. envoys’ visit, emphasizing the importance of ending the war.
The diplomatic efforts come amid reports of dwindling U.S. munitions stocks, with Trump attributing the depletion to Ukraine’s demands. Critics, however, suggest that U.S. actions against Iran have also contributed to the strain on resources. Despite Trump’s strained relationship with Ukraine and its president, he has maintained a closer rapport with Putin, inviting him to Alaska last year for his first visit to the U.S. since 2015.
As the situation evolves, Trump and Zelenskyy are expected to meet later this month, potentially providing another opportunity to advance peace negotiations. However, the path to a lasting resolution remains fraught with challenges, as both sides continue to assert their military objectives and territorial claims.
