In a recent address in Niš, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić announced that national elections will be held in approximately a month and a half. Vučić’s speech coincided with a session of the Main Board of the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) held in Niš. During his address, he highlighted ongoing negotiations with six new investors aimed at creating around 1,200 jobs in the city. He also announced the upcoming construction of a modern maternity hospital in Niš, which he described as the most beautiful and advanced in Serbia. The facility is designed to ensure that each mother has access to a private room or shares with only one other person, complete with individual bathrooms.
The president’s remarks come amid a backdrop of political tension, with protests against his administration and the SNS’s policies. Despite the announcement of the elections, Vučić’s focus remained on economic growth and infrastructure development. He highlighted the completion of a highway to Dimitrovgrad and the Bulgarian border, as well as the ongoing construction of a high-speed railway between Belgrade and Niš, expected to be completed within the next few years.
In his speech, Vučić also addressed the presence of protesters, who attempted to disrupt the SNS meeting. He noted that only about fifty demonstrators appeared, suggesting that their actions were indicative of a desire to suppress differing opinions and viewpoints. The president criticized what he termed as the “totalitarian nature” of those opposing the meeting, asserting that they sought to ban alternative perspectives.
