In an unusual and alarming incident, Tijana, a resident of Novi Beograd, experienced a terrifying encounter with a snake that she unknowingly brought back from a camping trip. The sequence of events began on August 16, which coincided with her birthday, during a camping outing with friends at Maglič. While waiting outside her tent, Tijana noticed a black snake darting towards it. Despite the initial scare, her friends managed to remove the snake, which then disappeared into the nearby Ibar River. They assumed the ordeal was over.
However, the story took a shocking turn three days later. Tijana was asleep in her new apartment in Novi Beograd when she was abruptly awakened by a pressure around her neck. In a panic, she realized it was the snake from the campsite, which had somehow found its way into her luggage and traveled back with her to Belgrade. The snake had wrapped itself around her neck, causing Tijana to instinctively struggle to remove it. She described the sensation as something tightening around her neck, akin to a vine gripping a tree.
In a state of panic, Tijana managed to free herself from the snake, which had become entangled in her hair. She retreated to the bathroom, where she tried to calm herself by washing her hair, a move she later described as oddly comforting. After regaining her composure, Tijana sought refuge at her mother’s nearby home. Remarkably, her mother had awoken at the exact moment the snake attacked her daughter, a coincidence Tijana attributed to maternal instinct.
The following day, Tijana enlisted the help of friends from the Faculty of Biology to search her apartment for the snake. Despite a thorough inspection, including checks of the air conditioning unit, drainage pipes, closets, and the water heater, the snake was nowhere to be found. It was later deduced that the snake, identified as a harmless water snake, likely escaped through the toilet in search of water, its natural instinct for survival.
Tijana took the precaution of warning her neighbors, particularly those living on the ground and first floors, to keep their toilet seats closed for the next few days. This incident also prompted her to advise others to always check their bags after packing and ensure zippers are securely closed to prevent similar occurrences.
Despite the harrowing experience, Tijana decided against moving out of her apartment. She expressed a desire to confront her fear of snakes by learning more about them in a controlled environment. The incident, while terrifying, revealed to Tijana a newfound strength and resilience she was previously unaware of. She noted that the experience changed her perception of herself, uncovering an inner strength beneath her gentle exterior.
