Ana Brnabić, the President of the Serbian National Assembly, has praised the foreign policy led by President Aleksandar Vučić, describing it as successful and balanced in a world marked by divisions. Brnabić highlighted Serbia’s ability to host significant international events, such as the recent gathering of the Non-Aligned Movement, and its strategic dialogues with major global powers, including the United States and China. She emphasized that Serbia has managed to maintain good relations with Russia without imposing sanctions, despite its aspirations for European integration.
Speaking to TV Pink, Brnabić asserted that Serbia’s diplomatic achievements under Vučić’s leadership are noteworthy, especially given the challenges faced by other, larger countries. She pointed out that Serbia has regular and effective communication with Russia and President Vladimir Putin, while also hosting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who expressed gratitude for Serbia’s principled stance.
Brnabić underscored the importance of the Non-Aligned Movement, particularly in the context of Serbia’s recent hosting of its 65th anniversary conference in Belgrade. She noted the presence of influential leaders from various countries, including the presidents of Ghana and Somalia, the prime ministers of Cameroon and Mozambique, and ministers from Mali, Sudan, Angola, and other nations. According to Brnabić, the event demonstrated Serbia’s capability to serve as a global center for dialogue.
The gathering in Belgrade saw double the number of delegations compared to the original conference in 1961, highlighting Serbia’s growing diplomatic influence. Brnabić expressed regret that the successes achieved by Serbia are often taken for granted by its citizens, despite the country’s significant accomplishments on the international stage.
Brnabić also addressed domestic political dynamics, asserting that the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) would accept the results of the upcoming elections, even if it means conceding defeat. She criticized opposition groups, accusing them of planning to incite violence if they do not win, referencing statements from opposition figures about potential unrest following the elections.
The comments from Brnabić come amidst ongoing political tensions in Serbia, where the government faces criticism over its foreign policy, particularly its relationships with Russia and China. These relationships have been a point of contention internationally, with some Western countries urging Serbia to align more closely with European and American interests.
