Belgrade Introduces New Electric Trains for EXPO 2027 Visitors

Belgrade is set to enhance its transportation infrastructure with the introduction of nine new electric trains, aimed at facilitating the movement of millions of visitors expected for EXPO 2027. These trains were officially received in a ceremony held in Changchun, China, at the facilities of CRRC Changchun Railway Vehicles. The new trains are intended to serve urban and suburban routes, connecting key locations including Belgrade, Nikola Tesla Airport, and the EXPO 2027 complex.

Miloš Živanović, the manager of the Department for Transport and Mobility at EXPO 2027 Beograd d.o.o., emphasized the critical role of these trains in ensuring efficient and reliable transportation during the event. “We face a significant responsibility to provide efficient and reliable transport for guests coming to Belgrade from around the world during the 93 days of the EXPO,” Živanović stated. The new railway connection is expected to simplify access to the exhibition, both from the city and the airport, while maintaining the regular flow of daily life in Belgrade.

The trains, already branded with EXPO 2027 motifs, are designed to enhance the visitor experience from the moment they embark on their journey to the exhibition. Živanović highlighted the importance of comfort and hospitality, aiming for guests to reach the exhibition quickly, comfortably, and safely, allowing them more time to explore the pavilions and participate in various programs.

Beyond the EXPO, these trains are expected to leave a lasting legacy, continuing to serve the public by facilitating daily commutes to work, the airport, fairs, sports events, and concerts. This project is seen as a testament to the successful partnership between Serbia and China in developing the country’s railway infrastructure.

Zoran Puzović, the executive director for traffic and commercial affairs at Srbijavoz, noted that this acquisition marks the continuation of a fruitful collaboration with the Chinese manufacturer CRRC. Following the successful deployment of high-speed trains capable of reaching 200 kilometers per hour between Belgrade and Subotica, this new generation of trains is set to enhance urban and suburban transport, further solidifying the partnership in railway development.

The EXPO 2027, scheduled to take place from May 15 to August 15, 2027, under the theme “Play for Humanity: Sport and Music for All,” is expected to attract over four million visitors. The project involves collaboration between Srbijavoz, CRRC Changchun Railway Vehicles, and EXPO 2027 Beograd d.o.o., with support from the Serbian Ministry of Finance. The new railway line will run from Belgrade Center Station, through Zemun Polje and Nikola Tesla Airport, to the National Stadium.

This development is part of broader efforts to boost Serbia’s international profile and local economies through infrastructure improvements in anticipation of the EXPO. While the introduction of these trains marks a significant step forward, the long-term success of this initiative will depend on the effective implementation and maintenance of the new infrastructure beyond the EXPO event.
