Zdravko Ponoš Urges EU Integration Ahead of Critical Serbian Elections

Zdravko Ponoš, a prominent figure in the “Evropska Srbija” electoral list, has called for immediate political change in Serbia, highlighting the upcoming elections as a critical juncture for the current regime. Ponoš, who also leads the Serbia Center (SRCE) party, emphasized that the elections represent a peak crisis for the ruling authorities, who he claims are unable to navigate out of their current predicament. He argues that it is not sufficient for the regime to simply step down; instead, Serbia must take decisive steps towards recovery and reform.

Ponoš advocates for Serbia’s integration into the European Union, describing it as the only realistic model for the country’s future. He categorically rejects any influences from Russia, America, or China, asserting that the EU is the path that will allow Serbia to thrive without territorial constraints. “At our station, only the European bus stops; there is no bus marked Russia, America, or China, only the European Union,” Ponoš stated. He envisions a Serbia that is part of the European family, where borders among Serbs disappear and the nation can achieve greatness in both breadth and depth.

The leader of SRCE criticized the current government for the emigration of youth and the depletion of pension funds. He cited the loss of 500,000 young people who have left the country over the past 14 years and the 840 million euros taken from pensioners’ earnings as issues for which the government should seek forgiveness. Ponoš also lamented the departure of healthcare professionals and students seeking education abroad, as well as the government’s attempts to undermine the University, which he considers a valuable national asset.

Ponoš’s call to action includes a plea to the citizens to participate in the elections and vote for “Evropska Srbija,” portraying it as a vote for a future in line with European standards. He urged the current authorities to keep their “sticky fingers” away from the electoral will of the people, stressing the importance of a peaceful election process. “I urge the current government to ensure that October 25 does not mirror what happened on September 24. We do not need a new October 5; let everything be decided by the will of the people on October 25,” Ponoš declared.

In the broader context, Ponoš has been vocal about the need for systemic reforms in Serbia. He has previously stated that Serbia cannot remain a “black hole” on the European map and must pursue immediate reforms. His past comments have highlighted the necessity for changes in governance and public institutions, emphasizing that the nation must align its foreign policy with European standards to avoid being sidelined.

As the elections approach, Ponoš’s statements underscore the urgency of political change and the need for Serbia to chart a clear path towards EU integration. His rhetoric reflects a broader discourse within Serbia about its future direction and the role of the European Union in shaping it. The political landscape remains dynamic, with various parties offering differing visions for Serbia’s place in the world. However, Ponoš’s focus on immediate action and accountability from the current government resonates with voters seeking change and alignment with European values.
