Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, speaking at a rally in Užice, emphasized the need for Serbia to bolster its military and national strength while maintaining dignity on the international stage. Vučić’s remarks come amid ongoing regional tensions and ahead of a significant legal decision in The Hague concerning former Kosovo President Hashim Thaçi. Vučić expressed his determination to protect Serbia’s national pride, stating, “We must work harder and better, strengthen our army and country in all its segments, but never allow ourselves to be humiliated.”
During his address at the “United Serbia” rally, Vučić reiterated his commitment to defending Serbia against perceived external pressures. He highlighted his request to the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals to permit General Ratko Mladić, who recently passed away, to die in Serbia. Vučić criticized the tribunal’s decision, suggesting it was part of a broader pattern of bias against Serbs. He warned that the upcoming ruling on September 16 regarding Thaçi could be perceived as an act of revenge against the Serbian people, predicting an acquittal for Thaçi on charges related to crimes against Serbs.
Vučić also expressed gratitude to the Serbian populace for their resilience against what he described as attempts by external forces to destabilize the country. He claimed that significant financial resources had been invested in efforts to undermine Serbia, but credited the strength and beliefs of the Serbian people for thwarting these attempts.
In his speech, Vučić extended an olive branch to political opponents, describing them as “misguided brothers and sisters” and expressing a willingness to engage in dialogue despite their lack of a coherent plan or program. He emphasized the importance of unity and looking towards a future that benefits all of Serbia.
The president’s remarks also touched on domestic issues, including infrastructure development in Užice, where he announced several projects, such as the construction of a tunnel beneath Kadinjača, set to begin on October 1. Vučić highlighted upcoming improvements to local schools and sports facilities, as well as the commencement of local road construction.
Additionally, Vučić addressed economic concerns, particularly regarding pensions, which he claimed are now at their highest in Serbian history. He promised a forthcoming announcement about further pension increases and additional financial support for pensioners and veterans.
